ZERO ENERGY - Solar Powered Elevators
In a developing world R&D is always focusing on providing products that are more efficient, reliable and at the same time respectful of the world and the environment around us.
Our new range of ZERO ENERGY systems allows an elevator (lift) to be fully independent from the Mains Power Supply and operate in autonomy while continuing to provide a safe and comfortable ride to the passengers using the system daily.
Photovoltaic systems are now cheaper and of a much better quality and the market can offer systems that have an average life span of around 20 - 25 years. Furthermore the latest generation battery packs, specifically designed for these types of systems have a lifetime that can sometimes exceed 10 years of operation. This has prompted us to focus on these achievements in technology and design a system that can save loads of energy and also reduce considerably the environmental impact. Further down this page we give you some actual calculations of the energy savings offered by these types of systems but first let us see how these photovoltaic systems work for our project :

PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS - exposed to the sun these panels generate an electrical current supply
CHARGE CONTROLLER- regulates the transfer of the electrical current to the batteries for charging, stopping the supply once the batteries are fully charged and monitoring the battery condition to prevent the lift motor from operating if, for any reason or fault, the batteries do not have sufficient charge to power the system for a complete run. This is the electronic mind of the system that maximises efficiency and reduces losses from the solar energy collected
BATTERY SYSTEM - accumulate the energy provided by the Photovoltaic Panels through the Charge Controller. These are purposely made batteries and not standard type rechargeable units since these special batteries are specifically designed for a Photovoltaic system and also have a much longer lifetime sometimes exceeding 10 years.
INVERTER- is an electronic device that converts the DC Power coming from the Charge Controller and Batteries system into AC Power required to power up the lift motor. This is possible since our gearless motors are very highly efficient and consume very little power compared to traditional units.
ZERO ENERGY - AE3 ELEVATORS have been designed based on the most popular range and style of lifts that are used in modern day medium sized developments and small households. This makes it possible for any individual wishing to invest in an Eco friendly system that saves hundreds / thousands of Euros in electricity bills, to do so without a very large capital outlay.
The main carachteristics of these systems are :
Load Capacity - 6 Passengers / 450 Kgs
Travel Speed - 0.60 m/s
Max. Motor Power - 2.8kW
In order to operate this standard type 2.8kW system as proposed, it is sufficient to have a Photovoltaic system that generates 1kWh. Considering 200 runs per day, each run for approximately 20 seconds, we require a total power supply of 4kW for the system. With 5 daily hours of radiation collection this system can generate 5kW, thus an excess of 25% over requirements that can satisfy any useage peaks and make up for any losses there might be in the system until rectified.
LATEST TECHNOLOGY FOR ENERGY SAVINGS AND USEAGE OPTIMISATION
Our top of the range control systems offer even more than we have described so far. An intelligent control system built into the control panel of the elevator, through a number of sensors positioned inside the lift shaft and on the cabin itself, and can thus adapt as following :
- modification of travelling speed in case battery charge is less than required or daily average useage is being surpassed.
- adaptation of power supply depending on the load present inside the cabin to make sure no excess energy is being used in the system.
- regeneration and collection of the energy used by the system for braking during operation.
- full lift operation even in case of power supply blackout since lift is independent from the mains supply.
NOTE : An emergency power supply system can be provided in order for the lift to be operated in case of faults to the Photovoltaic system and / or the batteries. This can be left switched off and only used in these extreme cases to avoid any sort of inconvenience to the users.
ENERGY SAVINGS COMPARED TO TRADITIONAL SYSTEMS
The advantages offered by this type of system are incredible. Furthermore the initial capital outlay for the purchase of the Photovoltaic system is recovered quite fast given the immense energy savings that are guaranteed by our ZERO ENERGY Package.
The ZERO Energy package provides a very eco friendly system that operates using the latest generation gearless machines and the intelligent control system varies the consumption so when the cabin is not loaded the power used is lowered to around 1.5kW from the 2.8kW maximum power. Even when operating at full power (2.8kW) these lifts save as much as half the energy when compared to a similar traditional elevator system.
Translated to figures this means that :
- our permanent magnet gearless machines consume around 65% less energy than a hydraulic power unit and 50% less energy when compared to a traditional traction 2 speed drive.
- peak starting current of our systems is 35% less than that of equivalent units
- 3800 kWh / year less consumption when compared to a hydraulic elevator (same specs)
- 1990 kWh / year less consumption when compared to a traditional electric elevator (same specs)
- 2300 Kg CO2 / year less Carbon footprint reduction compared to a hydraulic elevator (same specs)
- 1180 Kg CO2 / year less Carbon foot reduction compared to an electric elevator (same specs)
- 20% of the energy used by the elevator is recovered through intelligent control and braking systems
Also, apart from the system drive and machine, the cabin equipment and accessories are carefulyl selected to provide the most efficient and energy saving solutions possible :
- LED lighting inside the lift cabin guarantees huge reductions over traditional halogen lights (an average of 450 kWh / year for a traditional lift
- Intelligent control puts lighting and extractor fans on standby when system parked giving a further saving of around 300 kWh / year
